Downwards in Lisbon

During my trip through France, Spain and Portugal, Lisbon was one of the stops and I really enjoyed the few days of my stay there. Worth a visit.

CIMMYT's multi-crop, multi-use zero tillage seeder on a long-term conservation agriculture (CA) trial plot at the center's headquarters at El Batán, Mexico.

The seeder was designed at CIMMYT especially for CA. Small-grain seed such as wheat is placed in the large green tank (behind the smaller white and red ones), as is fertilizer, which is always applied on the same pass. Large-grain seed such as maize is placed in the white tanks, while the red tank can be used to add insecticide to the soil, for example if untreated seed is being used.

Rotating discs (not visible), cut through the crop residues and open up planting furrows in the soil. Inclined tubes deposit lines of seed into these, which are then covered by small press wheels at the back of the seeder. The larger wheel at the rear (far left) is the traction wheel, which transmits movement to the seeding apparatus. The wheel in front of this, and its counterpart on the other side of the machinery, are the depth control wheels, which determine how deep the seed is planted.

The larger wheel at the rear right is the traction wheel, which transmits movement to the seeding apparatus. It is crucial to take care that this wheel is touching the ground during the process, otherwise no seed is sown. The wheel in front of this, and its counterpart on the far left, are the depth control wheels, which determine how deep the seed is planted.

Sometimes crop residues can accumulate and obstruct the cutting disc that opens the planting furrow. The worker walking behind the seeder therefore uses his stick to break up any such clumps, and also monitors the general functioning of the seeder.

Fantasy Orb from The Lost City of Atlantis

The debate still rages on as to whether Atlantis truly existed or is merely legend. The first recorded history of Atlantis was written by Plato over 2,360 years ago.

Plato described it as an extraordinary Utopian society, thriving around 9,600 BC, which valued peace, art and wisdom. However, almost all cultures have legends of such a city as Atlantis. These legends, however, speak also of the unfathomed levels of wealth and knowledge that the inhabitants of Atlantis possessed, as well as how these made the people extremely decadent, cruel, lazy, and greedy; thus causing them to falter.

Some believe that the inhabitants of Atlantis were even more 'advanced' than our civilization today (and possibly wiser) and that not all Atlanteans died in their cataclysmic event (most likely floods resulting from an earthquake) but rather survived and are the ancestors of all of our modern day “intelligent” people. One of these survivors was Edgar Cayce. So, if one accepts this as fact, then, one could assume, all of our technology today is simply a rediscovering of the knowledge and information possessed by the people of Atlantis.

Surrealistic stories propose, due to the extremely superior intellectual level of Atlantis, that they had developed advanced technological creations such as, but not limited to, time machines, machinery to transport them into some sort of altered dimension, futuristic weaponry, and advanced communication devices.

I created this fantasy “glowing” and “vibrating” technologically advanced ancient orb on a specially designed stand which generates energy from the earth’s core upwards to the orb, allowing the orb to become a highly powerful telescope-like device which enabled the people of Atlantis to see the future, while I was thinking of Atlantis. I imagined they created this orb and stand to allow them to see the future so they could then create some mechanism or take some actions to alter the future to suit their own selfish and greedy desires.

Vintage Computer

The control panel of a vintage industrial minicomputer, perhaps from the late seventies (1970s). I believe the longest row of switches, numbered from 0 to 15, are for entering data into the computer in binary code. I've actually used a similar minicomputer many years ago and it was a pain entering programs into the computer in binary. We didn't have thumb drives and optical disks back then.

Day Two Hundred Ten

Just me at the kitchen table listening to some records. Do people still come over other people's homes to listen to records still or did I just seriously date myself?
